## What does OSHA require of an aerial lift trainer?

OSHA doesn't certify trainers, and it doesn't license them. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.453, only trained persons may operate an aerial lift — and it's the employer's job to make sure that training and the hands-on evaluation are done by someone qualified.

OSHA defines a qualified person at OSHA 29 CFR 1926.32 as someone who, by degree, certificate, or professional standing, or by extensive knowledge, training, and experience, can solve problems related to the work. The ANSI/SAIA A92.24 training standard adds that whoever trains MEWP operators must know the equipment, the hazards, and how to evaluate an operator's competence.

That's what this course documents. Your trainer finishes with a certificate showing they've completed formal train-the-trainer instruction, plus the evaluation checklists they'll use to sign off each operator on your equipment, at your site.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does OSHA certify aerial lift trainers?

No. OSHA doesn't certify, license, or approve trainers or training providers. It requires the employer to ensure training and evaluation are conducted by a qualified person, as defined at 29 CFR 1926.32. This course documents that your trainer has been trained to that role.

### Who should become our in-house trainer?

Usually a supervisor or experienced operator who already knows your equipment and worksite. There's no minimum experience requirement to enroll, but trainees must be 18 or older, and they need to operate the lift competently and judge whether someone else can.

### How many people can our trainer certify?

As many as you need. The $149 certifies one trainer, and that trainer can then train and evaluate an unlimited number of operators at your company. If you want more than one in-house trainer, each needs their own certification.

### Can our trainer sign off operators on any aerial lift?

On the equipment types they're trained and experienced on. The course covers all MEWP groups and types, but the hands-on evaluation must happen on the specific machine each operator will use.

### Does trainer certification expire?

OSHA sets no calendar deadline. Most employers renew every three years, following ANSI/SAIA A92.24. Retraining is required sooner if the trainer's knowledge is out of date or equipment changes. Renewals are free, for life.

### What if we're not happy with the course?

The online trainer certification carries a one-year, 100% money-back guarantee. If you're not satisfied, contact us within a year of purchase with the purchaser's name and the email used to register, and we'll refund it in full.

### Does the course cover scissor lifts and other MEWPs?

Yes. It covers all MEWP groups and types, including scissor lifts, vertical mast lifts and aerial work platforms. OSHA regulates scissor lifts as mobile scaffolds under 29 CFR 1926.451 and 1926.454, so your trainer evaluates scissor lift operators against those rules and aerial lift operators against 1926.453.
